Heel pain that won't go away: is it more than plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, and most people improve with stretching, supportive shoes, and time. But when heel pain lasts for months, it is worth taking a closer look.
Other causes can feel similar. A stress fracture of the heel bone often hurts with every step and may follow a jump in activity. An irritated nerve on the inside of the heel can cause burning or tingling. Achilles tendon problems usually hurt at the back of the heel rather than underneath.
Signs it's time to see a podiatrist: pain for more than a few weeks, pain that wakes you at night, numbness or tingling, swelling, or pain after an injury.
A visit usually includes an exam and sometimes an X-ray or ultrasound. Getting the right diagnosis is what lets treatment work.
