Neuropathy & Nerve Pain
Neuropathy is damage or irritation of the nerves in the feet and legs. It is common with diabetes, but can also come from pinched nerves, injury, vitamin deficiencies, and other causes.
Common symptoms
- Burning, tingling, or “pins and needles”
- Numbness or feeling like you are walking on cotton
- Sharp, shooting, or electric pain, often worse at night
- Loss of balance

See us if symptoms keep you up at night, are getting worse, or if you have numbness and a wound you did not feel.
How we diagnose it
We review your history, test sensation and strength, and may order nerve testing or imaging to find where the nerve is affected.
Treatment options
- Blood sugar and vitamin review with your primary care doctor
- Medications for nerve pain
- Bracing, shoes, and physical therapy
- For some patients with a compressed nerve: peripheral nerve decompression surgery
